Strange noises from the pipes can signal an obstruction that’s about to become a real problem. Hear gurgling? Dealing with slow drainage or difficulty flushing toilets? It’s time to get the drains cleaned.

So what’s clogging your drain? Usually one of these:

• Buildup of soap scum or grease

• Hair being caught in your pipes

• Objects being flushed down the toilet that shouldn’t be

• Poor pipe installation

• Plants and dirt building up in your outdoor pipes

Unclog Your Drain

There are a couple of DIY methods people use to unclog their drains, although few of them are guaranteed to work.

The most commonly suggested method? A cup of bicarb soda down the drain, then a cup of vinegar. Leave the mix for ten minutes, then follow it with boiling water. Whether it actually works is up for debate.

You can also buy drain cleaning products, which are mostly aimed at clogged bathroom drains. Be careful though. Some of these make the issue worse instead of fixing it.
