Find Out What’s Clogging Your Drain
Blocked drains are one of the most frustrating things to encounter in your home. It is important to know why your drains are becoming clogged and what you can do to get your drains working again. The more informed you are, the less you will be impacted by a clogged drain in the future.
Identifying a Clogged Drain
Aside from the obvious sign of your drain not emptying properly, there are a few other things you can look out for so that you can know whether your drain is starting to become clogged or not.
If your drains seem to be draining slowly, there may be a blockage forming in your home’s pipes. Toilets regularly blocking can also be a sign of a blockage further along the pipe system.
Strange noises coming from the pipes may also point toward an obstruction which will soon cause you trouble. If you notice these noises, slow drainage or difficulty flushing toilets, it may be time to get your drains cleaned.
What is Clogging My Drain?
There are a few things that can cause drain clogs, including:
- Buildup of soap scum or grease
- Hair being caught in your pipes
- Objects being flushed down the toilet that shouldn’t be
- Poor pipe installation
- Plants and dirt building up in your outdoor pipes
Everybody will experience a blocked drain at some point, but knowing what causes this issue can help you avoid some of the causes, making it less likely to happen.
Unclog Your Drain
There are a couple of DIY methods people use to unclog their drains, although few of them are guaranteed to work.
The most commonly suggested method is a cup of bicarb soda put down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar. This mixture is then left for ten minutes before boiling water is also put down the drain. The effectiveness of this method is debated, however.
You can also buy drain cleaning products, mostly used when a bathroom drain is clogged. Be careful, however, as some of these products can make the issue worse, rather than fix it.
